Words of Wisdom:

“When we make
other people responsible
for our feelings,
we also make them
responsible for ending
our feelings."

About Maria Rowe

Maria Rowe is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, specializing in psychotherapy for individuals and couples. She is licensed through the Board of Behavioral Sciences in the State of California. Her license number is MFC39121. She has been engaged in private practice for more than 25 years.

Maria's areas of focus include support for couples and adult individuals having issues and difficulties with intimacy, communication, anger expression, and sexuality.

She provides compassionate grief & loss counseling to persons experiencing the loss of loved ones or losses of trust, self-esteem, and security stemming from trauma and abuse. With her help, many clients have received tremendous relief in managing anxiety, panic, PTSD and depression, as well as substance abuse and addictions. She is committed to facilitating personal transformation in her clients' lives. She offers guidance through feelings of stuck-ness and struggles with finding meaning and purpose amid spirituality issues and creativity blocks.

She has extensive experience with pre-marital counseling, divorce, remarriage and blended families. She believes that the health of parental relationships is an important - if not THE MOST IMPORTANT - contribution that she can make to family life, so that future generations of children can reap the benefits of conscious parenting and respectful partnership.

Her work also includes dealing with planned or unexpected life transitions such as "launching" teens, re-marriage, job changes, or illness.

While her practice focuses on couples and individual adults, she also works very effectively with families and adolescents.

Ms. Rowe graduated from the University of Santa Monica with a MA in Counseling Psychology, as well as a MA in Spiritual Psychology. The University of Santa Monica is internationally known for supporting soul-centered education and healing.

Maria's clinical experience and education focus on facilitating healing mind-body-spirit connections that are basic to a person's well-being and wholeness. "Spiritual Psychology" as an emerging discipline in the last two decades, encompasses the sum of all four levels of a person's experience: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Moreover, the spiritual realm is distinguished from religious, in that it includes any experience that gives a sense of purpose and meaning and supports devotion to a larger force (religious, artistic, social) beyond oneself. In Spiritual Psychology, healing and wellness derive from focus on the whole person.

Ms. Rowe has received extensive postgraduate training in couple’s therapy and her methods are grounded in Imago techniques, non-violent communication principles, mindfulness and neurobiological research on attachment.

She also holds certification as Expressive Arts Practitioner from the Institute of Expressive Arts in Newport Beach, CA.

Additional education includes Time-Line Therapy, Reiki I & II and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Moreover, other clinical training has involved developing and running groups for healing from Domestic Violence, Divorce Recovery, and Anger Management for men and women.

Before becoming an MFT, Ms. Rowe received an MS in Information & Computer Science (UCI, 1985) with a focus on the social impacts of computing and worked 20 years for technology organizations. Through that experience she developed a commitment to working toward the appropriate use of computers to enhance our lives, while maintaining a balance with creative and artistic expression as keys to the well-being of each person. Additionally, her experience gives her important perspective for coaching individuals in workplace issues.

Ms. Rowe also holds a BA in Fine Arts from New York University (1971).

From my personal work in healing using the arts and experiential processes throughout the last 25 years, I've come to honor the mysteries of creative expression. Having journeyed into those realms myself, I am aware of the depth of discovery that is available from an individual's commitment to expressive process work.

For 15 years, I displayed and sold functional and sculptural ceramic art. Currently I paint, draw and write. As my graduate project in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, I created a “Healing of Memories Series" in clay. I’m still plumbing the depths of the pieces and poetry that emerged. I believe that artistic, musical, poetic, and movement expression have been a blessed part of my psycho-spiritual healing since childhood. Through creative expression I’ve covered a lot of emotional, mental, spiritual and physical ground toward coming into soul-centered relationship to myself and others.

My commitment to my clients is to assist them on their own expressive healing journey, should they be so inclined.

I believe the keys to healing include non-judgment, forgiveness, self-responsibility, a healthy sense of humor, and honest partnership with a committed listener.

you are in charge.
Then you can consciously design what you want in your relationships, rather than leaving it to the primitive forces of your unconscious.”
